The Systems Manager is responsible for the oversight, maintenance, operation and optimisation of the institution’s student management information systems, administrative and financial management systems. The Manager ensures the reliable, secure, and efficient operation of information systems to support the institution’s strategic plans. This involves hands-on system management, process development, vendor relationship management, and collaboration with cross-functional teams. The Manager must possess excellent problem-solving and analytical skills, with the ability to identify and resolve complex technical issues. The Manager must possess very good organisational and interpersonal skills to work with various stakeholders across the University. The Manager is reports to the Director, Information and Communication Technology Services Department.

Duties and Responsibilities

The Systems Manager’s main principal accountabilities are:
•To oversee the operation and maintenance of the institution’s campus-wide core ERP systems, storage, and related infrastructure
•Oversees the design, implementation, and maintenance of databases that store and organize the institution’s data.
•Optimise application performance, scalability, and reliability through techniques like refactoring, profiling, and architectural improvements.
•Develop use cases to guide systems development or changes to existing systems to improve data interoperability.
•Develop and manage processes for software systems administration, documentation, backup strategies, disaster recovery, and data security.
•Research and evaluate new technologies, frameworks, and tools to identify opportunities for innovation and improvement.
•Implement complex security related algorithms and encryption techniques in order to ensure data security.
•Participate in strategic IT planning and budgeting to align with institutional goals.
•Leading and mentoring the systems development team on performance management, and fostering a culture of continuous learning within the department.

Qualifications and Experience

• A Master’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related technical field, with at least five years of experience in software development, at the level of Systems Engineer preferably in a university setting.
• Proficiency in one or more programming languages (Java, PHP, C#, Python, JavaScript).
• Strong understanding of software design principles, data structures, algorithms and databases.
• Experience with software development methodologies.
• Familiarity with version control systems, testing frameworks, and deployment tools.
• Excellent problem-solving, analytical, and troubleshooting skills.
• Familiarity with IT service management frameworks and industry standards.
• Proven experience and demonstratable success in leading and managing a team.
