UNICEF Zimbabwe implements a broad Nutrition programme that supports policy and enabling environment work, subnational capacity building and community nutrition interventions under the Maternal, Infant, Young Child and Adolescent nutrition (MIYCAN), management of wasting, micronutrient supplementation and emergency response. Zimbabwe is a country with a low burden of wasting, but relatively higher chronic malnutrition (stunting) and ‘hidden hunger' - micronutrient deficiencies. The major drivers of malnutrition in Zimbabwe are chronic in nature, and there is a need to better understand the sectoral trends and their impact on malnutrition in Zimbabwe. Whilst it is widely accepted that multiple interventions have been implemented and continue to be implemented, there is need for strengthened nutrition information management, comprehensive trend analysis and knowledge management on performance of key indicators, success factors and barriers to optimal nutrition programming, as well as documentation and communication on key nutrition issues. UNICEF Nutrition needs to demonstrate efficiency in its programming, communicate key interventions and successes, and adopt a more concerted approach to data analytics in its programming.
The UNV will support data generation and utilization, trend analysis, knowledge management and communication and visibility for the UNICEF Nutrition programme. The UNV will be the section focal point for DHIS2 and other routine information systems as well as ZimLAC Assessments and other surveys and assessments.
Duties and Responsibilities
Under the direct supervision of the Nutrition Specialist, the UN Volunteer will undertake the following tasks: Support documentation, knowledge management and operational research for nutrition. Support the development of interactive dashboards and tools for updating, tracking and reporting the situational analysis for nutrition for early warning and early action. Engage with partners to ensure relevant nutrition data is provided to UNICEF on a timely manner. Review data and develop visual presentation of the nutrition situation in the country. Develop visual tools or reports to present nutrition information through factsheets, newsletters, infographics, maps or any other relevant means. Support the design and establishment of a nutrition repository/library for ongoing work within the nutrition sector. Support the development of a talent mapping/capacity database for nutrition specific and nutrition sensitive programming. Conduct social listening or social analysis on nutrition issues and generate content for social media and where possible conduct social media analysis. Provide monthly and quarterly reports on nutrition data analyzed and support monitoring activities carried out. Engage in and technically support data collection exercises including the annual ZimLAC and other surveys and assessments. Document key successes through human interest stories, promising practice and lessons learned. Any other related tasks as may be required or assigned by the supervisor.
Furthermore, UN Volunteers are required to: Strengthen their knowledge and understanding of the concept of volunteerism by reading relevant UNV and external publications and take active part in UNV activities (for instance in events that mark International Volunteer Day); Be acquainted with and build on traditional and/or local forms of volunteerism in the host country; Reflect on the type and quality of voluntary action that they are undertaking, including participation in ongoing reflection activities; Contribute articles/write-ups on field experiences and submit them for UNV publications/websites, newsletters, press releases, etc.; Assist with the UNV Buddy Programme for newly-arrived UN Volunteers; Promote or advise local groups in the use of online volunteering, or encourage relevant local individuals and organizations to use the UNV Online Volunteering service whenever technically possible.
Qualifications and Experience
Requirements Required experience: 3 years of experience in national and/or international level in social marketing, data and statistical analysis and visualization, or other relevant programmes; experience with M&E tools is an asset, as is experience working in the UN or other international development organization; Bachelor's degree in a relevant area, e.g. Graphic design, Data Analytics, Statistics, Social Marketing or area related to health informatics; Masters degree is an added advantage. Strong and demonstrable graphic designing or data visualization skills and analysis of large datasets is a must; Excellent oral and written skills; excellent drafting, formulation, reporting skills; Accuracy and professionalism in document production and editing; Excellent interpersonal skills; culturally and socially sensitive; ability to work inclusively and collaboratively with a range of partners, including grassroots community members, religious and youth organizations, and authorities at different levels; familiarity with tools and approaches of communications for development. Ability to work and adapt professionally and effectively in a challenging environment; ability to work effectively in a multicultural team of international and national personnel. Advanced computer literacy, including proficiency in various MS Office applications (Excel, Word, etc.), power BI and email/internet; familiarity with database management; and office technology equipment. Self-motivated, ability to work with minimum supervision; ability to work with tight deadlines. Sound security awareness. Have affinity for or interest in Nutrition or child health related matters and, volunteerism as a mechanism for durable development, and the UN System.
