job Description

UNICEF Zimbabwe is inviting applications for a national individual to develop and document updates on key nutrition interventions, strategies, and technical guidelines while enhancing south-to-south learning and knowledge exchange.

BACKGROUND:
The Ministry of Health and Child Care with support from UNICEF has been capacitating an extensive network of cadres such as health workers, community cadres, nutrition technical staff to implement nutrition programs. Nutritionists serve as nutrition program managers responsible for the design, implementation, support, and mentorship to other government cadres and communities and hence are ultimately responsible for program quality. Continuous capacity development of nutrition cadres is critical for adaptation, scale of relatively new programs such as the school nutrition program and the roll out of new guidelines on the management of malnutrition. MoHCC and UNICEF have supported continuous capacity development through national and subnational review meetings, and this has served as a key platform for knowledge exchange, professional networking and south-to-south learning exchanges amongst themselves.
There is need to strengthen accountability for program delivery using a harmonized/standardized approach and strengthen nutrition program quality. The aim is to encourage more regular contact between the district and provincial nutritionists and the health facilities. The technical review and planning meeting will set the tone for the next 2 years and address issues such as the nutrition supply chain, the updated Care Group guidelines and materials, the incorporation of Early Childhood Development, Vitamin A Supplementation roles and responsibilities for increasing coverage, etc.
The last review meeting that congregated these professional cadres was held some years ago. Despite the nutritionists being trained preservice, there have been disparities in the implementation and reporting on the various nutrition interventions that are being implemented in the districts. This has raised a need to standardize the planning, implementation, and monitoring of the full package of nutrition programs and strength reporting for all elements of the program to ensure positive impacts on community health. Following the launch and rollout of the school nutrition guidelines coupled with the new guidance from established programs, MoHCC and UNICEF would like to host a Nutrition Technical Review Meeting with nutritionists from all the 63 districts. With this contract, UNICEF will support a review and documentation of updates on key nutrition interventions, strategies, and technical guidelines while enhancing south-to-south learning and knowledge exchange.
