Mafambisse
Purpose of the Position:
The General Manager oversees the full Mafambisse operation, including the raw sugar mill, sugar cane estates, a rice milling plant, rice development projects, and partnerships with private growers. The role is accountable for safe, efficient, and sustainable operations, meeting production and financial goals, and driving continuous improvement. The GM works closely with functional executives to ensure alignment with national strategy, governance, and group standards.
Strategic Leadership
▪ Align and implement strategy, goals, and direction for Mafambisse in line with group objectives and Mozambique Country Exco directives.
▪ Deliver turnaround, and growth objectives across sugar milling, agricultural estates, and rice operations.
▪ Optimise land, cane, rice, labour, technology, and financial resources to deliver production, yield, and profitability targets.
Operational Excellence
▪ Ensure the optimisation of milling capacity, yields, cane-to-sugar ratio, and rice production.
▪ Drive continuous improvement initiatives with measurable milestones and KPIs.
▪ Lead integrated management of Production, Agriculture, Rice Operations, Engineering, Procurement, HR, and Finance.
Safety, Health & Environment (SHE)
▪ Embed safety as a non-negotiable value, ensuring a zero-harm culture.
▪ Lead implementation of SHE systems, audits, training, and visible felt leadership.
▪ Drive employee health, wellbeing, and community safety.
Governance, Compliance & Cost Management
▪ Uphold governance standards, internal controls, and audit compliance.
▪ Drive disciplined cost management, budgeting, procurement, and capital expenditure.
▪ Provide transparent reporting to the MD and Mozambique Country Exco.
People & Leadership
▪ Lead, coach, and hold accountable a multi-disciplinary leadership team.
▪ Attract, retain, and develop operational and leadership talent.
▪ Build a succession pipeline and ensure performance management systems with clear goals and consequences.
Stakeholder & Community Engagement
▪ Build trust-based relationships with growers, unions, government, and local communities.
▪ Support consistent country-level external affairs strategy.
▪ Develop sustainable initiatives (food security, rice and cane smallholder support, firewood, infrastructure projects).
Country Exco Contribution
▪Collaborate actively with the Mozambique Country Exco, sharing best practices and ensuring alignment across operations.
▪ Contribute to country-wide strategy, governance, and stakeholder engagement.
Financial parameters
▪ Revenue and profit growth.
▪ ROI and cost efficiency.
▪ Strong cash flow and capital discipline.
▪ Employee engagement and retention.
▪ Balanced scorecard delivery.
Qualifications
▪ Bachelor’s degree in Engineering (Chemical, Mechanical, Electrical, Agricultural) or Agriculture. ▪ Business/Management qualification essential; MBA or equivalent postgraduate preferred.
Experience
▪ 8–10 years of senior operational or general management experience in heavy industry (preferably sugar or agri-processing).
▪ Proven track record in turnaround and recovery situations.
▪ Strong expertise in governance, compliance, and financial oversight.
▪ Demonstrated success in stakeholder management, including government, growers, and communities.
▪ Advantageous: multinational or cross-cultural leadership experience.
▪ Fluency in English (Portuguese highly advantageous).

▪ Operational Excellence: Ability to optimise milling and agricultural operations for productivity and efficiency.
▪ Business & Financial Acumen: Strong grasp of industry dynamics, cost structures, and financial drivers.

▪ Collaborative Leadership: Aligns site priorities with country strategy as part of the Mozambique Country Exco.
