Mission and objectives:
The United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women (UN Women) was established to accelerate progress on meeting the needs for women and girls worldwide. UN Women supports UN Member States as they set global standards for achieving gender equality and works with governments and civil society to design laws, policies, programmes and services needed to implement these standards. It stands behind women’s equal participation in all aspects of life, focusing on five priority areas: increasing women’s leadership and participation; ending violence against women; engaging women in all aspects of peace and security processes; enhancing women’s economic empowerment; and making gender equality central to national development planning and budgeting. UN Women also coordinates and promotes the UN system’s work in advancing gender equality.

Context:
Zimbabwe’s emergencies are climate-induced. The country is prone to experiencing flooding due to tropical cyclones and El Nino induced droughts. The country is currently facing an El Nino induced drought, which was declared a national state of disaster in April 2024. UN Women’s work to strengthen accountability towards gender equality in humanitarian action, increasing access to protection for women and girls and supporting their leadership and empowerment in humanitarian settings. UN Women also aims at ensuring that more women play a greater role and are better served by humanitarian response and recovery efforts. UN Women intends to build on its existing collaboration and ongoing initiatives with OCHA, UNHCR, and UNFPA and will be expanded through joint work with EVAW and WEE on enhancing leadership and protection of women and preventing GBV in humanitarian settings as well as ensuring, access to livelihoods and recovery of women and girls in the nexus between peace, humanitarian action and development.

Duties and Responsibilities

• Provide technical inputs and analysis to various humanitarian and emergency response related strategic and policy documents to ensure that they are gender sensitive.
• Support preparation for advocacy and learning events and conduct relevant training sessions when necessary
• Collaborate with implementing partners to deliver high-quality interventions for assigned projects.
• Work closely with other cluster leads to develop detailed action plans, reports, and deliverables that integrate gender.
• Attend with team members relevant forums and support coordination within the UN humanitarian, development, and peace nexus
• Ensure close follow-up for the effective implementation of a strategic partnership between the host entity, the Government and civil society organizations to promote gender equality in line with the commitments.
• Assist in conducting research on new areas of engagement and in developing concept notes to support resource mobilization
• Support monitoring & evaluation, documenting, and reporting to donors and the host entity of the outcomes, impact, and lessons learned

Qualifications and Experience

Required Experience:
-3 years of experience in at the national and/or international level in gender equality and women’s rights, designing, managing, and implementing development projects in a humanitarian context; experience in partnership with NGOs and civil society organizations is an asset, as is experience working in the UN or other international development organization.
• Overall good understanding of the social and political landscape of the country.
• Experience in analytical writing and research; writing strategy documents and project/programme reports; excellent oral and written skills.
• Accuracy and professionalism in document production and editing.
• Excellent interpersonal skills; culturally and socially sensitive; ability to work inclusively and collaboratively with a range of partners, including grassroots community members, religious and youth organizations, and authorities at different levels; familiarity with tools and approaches of communications for development.
• Ability to work and adapt professionally and effectively in a challenging environment; ability to work effectively in a multicultural team of international and national personnel.
• Self-motivated, ability to work with minimum supervision; ability to work with tight deadlines.

English, Level: Fluent, Required

Required education level:
Bachelor degree or equivalent in Human Rights, Gender and Women’s Studies, International Relations, Sociology, International Law, or other social science fields
