Position Title: Consular Assistant (General) - All Applicants/All Sources

Duties and Responsibilities

The Consular Assistant interacts daily with U.S. citizens, visa applicants, host government officials, and other interested parties to provide the full range of Nonimmigrant Visa, Immigrant Visa, and American Citizen Services, including Special Consular Services and Fraud Prevention, offered at Post. The position requires a high-level attention to detail to ensure cases meet documentary requirements, as well as to spot trends or potential issues and escalate those as necessary. The job holder is fully cross trained to function in any role as required by consular scheduling. The job holder serves as one of the primary points of contact for U.S. citizens in the consular district and maintains a network of public and private sector contacts who may be able to assist U.S. citizens. Communicates directly with consular applicants, host country government officials, and U.S. citizens in distress, and assists in the preparation of emergency messaging and website updates. Fields inquiries by phone, in-person, or in writing (email or written correspondence). The job holder handles routine inquires and directs only highly complex, unusual, or questionable inquires to a supervisor or consular officer.

Qualifications and Experience

EXPERIENCE:
Minimum two years of experience involving the application of regulations and law, extensive public contact, customer service, and/or problem-solving.

JOB KNOWLEDGE:
Knowledge of the local cultural, social, legal environment.

Education Requirements:
Completion of two years of post-secondary education is required.

Host-Country Language: Shona/Ndebele: Level 4 - Fluent; speaking/reading/writing, may include the ability to translate

SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Knowledge and skills of MS Word, Outlook, Excel, and Power Point are required. Must be able to act independently and exercise sound judgment at all times. Initiative, common sense, and tact are required to meet unexpected and unique situations. Discretion is required to uphold privacy rights of U.S. citizen customers. Must be able to maintain working relationships with local officials; this includes representing the Embassy or Consulate with high-level contacts. Must be able to work professionally and productively with contacts and customers from all backgrounds.
