The term "Tsungirirai" translates to "persevere and be courageous" in Shona. Established in 1994 by the late Mrs. Phillipa Henderson, Tsungirirai Welfare Organisation emerged in response to the devastating impact of HIV/AIDS in the Norton community. Mrs. Henderson's compassionate and mission-driven nature led to the initiation of Tsungirirai, where she served as the founding Director. Initially providing counseling and home-based care services for those affected by HIV/AIDS, the organization officially registered with the Ministry of Public Service, Labour, and Social Welfare in 1996 as a formal welfare organization dedicated to HIV/AIDS programming.
Evolution of Programs:
Over the years, Tsungirirai's programs have evolved to adapt to the changing landscape of HIV and AIDS. The organization initially focused on home-based care, addressing the urgent need for care as individuals were being discharged from hospitals in bedridden conditions. Educational initiatives, such as the Home-Based Care (HBC) project and HIV prevention activities like stepping stones and Auntie Stella, were implemented to raise awareness and prevent further infections.
As the pandemic led to an increase in orphaned and vulnerable children (OVCs), Tsungirirai expanded its scope to include OVC programming, currently servicing over 22,000 children in Norton, Chegutu, and Zvimba.
