The International Institute for Sustainable Development (IISD) is seeking two skilled Communications Officers to join its Resilience team. The positions will focus on implementing communications strategies for specific programs within the team. One officer will primarily work on the portfolios of Nature-based Solutions, adaptation in Canada, and environment, conflict, and peacebuilding.

They will also lead communications for the Nature for Climate Adaptation Initiative (NCAI) and contribute to the National Adaptation Plan (NAP) Global Network. The other officer will be responsible for developing and monitoring the communications strategy for IISD’s Climate Adaptation and Protected Area (CAPA) Initiative, which aims to promote climate resilience and protect biodiversity in Protected Areas and critical landscapes in the Global South.

Role and Responsibilities:

  1. Creative Content:
  • Develop and implement communications plans for various projects, reports, campaigns, and events related to nature-based solutions, adaptation, and peacebuilding.
  • Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to ensure adherence to communication timelines and evaluate and report on the impact of communication plans.
  • Shape new communication strategies for relevant projects within the officer’s areas of responsibility.
  • Collaborate with IISD’s core communications team to align messaging and amplify programmatic expertise through the shared editorial calendar.
  • Engage with donors to demonstrate the impact of their support.
  1. Public Engagement and Social Media:
  • Contribute to email outreach strategies.
  • Conduct outreach for events and manage post-event follow-up, including uploading webinar recordings and sending thank-you emails.
  • Inform and manage the Resilience Program’s Twitter account, ensuring relevant, engaging, and targeted posts. Monitor partner organizations’ feeds for cross-promotion opportunities.
  1. Media Outreach:
  • Engage with journalists and influencers to secure targeted coverage for IISD’s research and initiatives.
  • Draft and disseminate press releases, media briefings, and pitches for reporters and editors.
  • Facilitate media training for IISD experts.
  • Conduct media monitoring and provide reports on coverage and digital performance.
  1. Digital Strategy:
  • Manage content within content management systems such as Drupal or WordPress.
  • Develop articles, blog posts, infographics, and videos to make IISD’s work accessible to non-expert audiences.
  • Review and update program-related pages on IISD websites.
  • Monitor and report on website traffic and engagement using analytics software.
  • Assist in producing digital content, including social media graphics, presentations, and images.
  1. Internal Processes:
  • Ensure brand coherence and compliance with IISD’s communication practices.
  • Manage internal processes related to the development and dissemination of communication products.
  • Maintain strong relationships with program staff to understand their research and policy objectives and provide editorial guidance.
  • Stay updated on industry best practices.

Qualifications and Skills:

  • A university-level degree in journalism, communications, or a related social science discipline.
  • At least 5 years of relevant professional experience in policy-focused journalism, public relations, or organizational communications.
  • Experience with communication planning and strategy, media outreach, and social media campaigns.
  • Familiarity with online content management systems and website monitoring tools, such as WordPress and Google Analytics.
  • Knowledge or experience in climate change adaptation, environmental peacebuilding, and nature-based solutions is desirable.
  • Strong writing and editing skills, including the ability to adapt content for different purposes.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, media monitoring platforms, and email marketing systems.
  • Photography, video editing, and Adobe Creative Cloud skills are considered assets.
  • Strong interpersonal, problem-solving, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a diverse and inclusive environment.
  • Fluency in written and spoken English; knowledge of French and Spanish is advantageous.
