About the project

“Sizimele Action for Building Resilience in Zimbabwe” is a multi-year project meant to build resilience and well-being of 31,455 at risk households in Insiza, Lupane and Matobo districts of which over 60% are smallholder women rural farmers, 15% unemployed migrant youths and 10% vulnerable households. The main objective of this project is to enable recovery and enhance the resilience of at risk smallholder farmers so that they are food, income and nutrition secure in the face of increasing multiple and chronic shocks and stressors. This initiative was identified and designed in a participatory manner with target groups, local authorities and other stakeholders to transform the livelihoods and resilience of 31,455 households directly and 125,800 men, women and children indirectly in the three districts. This was achieved by building community capacities to prevent and mitigate potential negative impacts of shocks and stressors.

The Sizimele initiative has four major outcomes: Communities in 57 wards have access to information for decision making on weather related shocks and relevant programmes; Increased crop and livestock asset base and productivity for improved food, nutrition and income security; Strengthened and diversified livelihoods and incomes for local economic development of 31,455 households; Integration of resilience models for systems change & new knowledge in national programmes by government, private sector and other local development partners.

The Sizimele consortium of 10 organizations implementing the Zimbabwe Resilience Building Fund (ZRBF) project and would like to strengthen its market linkages component that was implemented during the past three years. A vacancy has arisen within the Sizimele Consortium for a Bulawayo based Value Chain Expert with frequent travel to the three operational districts:


Purpose of the position

Under the overall supervision of the Sizimele Consortium Team Leader, the incumbent will work to build strong relationships with the business community, government stakeholders, NGO partners, financiers, and smallholder producers in Lupane, Matobo and Insiza districts. S/he will innovatively provide SIZIMELE clients with the necessary business insights to scale their business, specifically in relation to improving smallholder business models, for resilience building. The purpose of this role is to provide leadership in value chain development and consolidation of the same as the project enters into an extension.


Job description

The candidate is expected to manage day-to-day relationships with private sector players, farmer producer groups, local authorities and government stakeholders;

Design innovative interventions that would facilitate change among targeted market actors;

Support selected market actors to improve commercial, financial and technical competencies while mainstreaming resilience, competitiveness and inclusiveness in project activities;

Contribute to internal learning and knowledge management processes by conducting performance monitoring, Cost Benefit Analysis, market assessments, market analysis, project reviews and evaluations as appropriate;

Collect, analyse, interpret and compile reports that communicate strengths and weaknesses in value chains; Document success stories and lessons for adaptive programming;

Design and deliver comprehensive value chain training programme to all Sizimele frontline staff across all operational districts;

Conduct business capacity diagnostics, identify skills needs and provide technical assistance to small-medium businesses (entrepreneurs, agro-dealers, ISAL groups);

Link various value chain actors to finance (MFIs, Banks);

Design and implement innovative financial products that will increase financial inclusion by small scale farmers;

Assist in proposal writing for catalytic grants and/or commercial funding on various businesses;

Address resilience, sustainability, commercialization, production and marketing solutions of selected value chains;

Networking skills to engage with both internal and external partners, and capacity to communicate fluently with different stakeholders;

Engagement and presentation at different fora.


Qualifications

A relevant master’s degree or equivalent in Finance, Agribusiness, Economics, Development. ;

Demonstrated competences and experience in carrying out similar projects - Private sector and pro-poor market development;

Knowledge of private sector and pro-poor market development, in particular of agriculture value chain approaches, including regarding regional, private sector companies and financial institutions; Knowledge of environmental sustainability and resilience issues in agriculture value chains including proven private sector companies’ models and related investments, and expertise in integrating environmental and resilience aspects in value chains; At least 5 years of professional experience in business management and/or developmental work; Technical and training experience in building skills capacity amongst entrepreneurs, agro-dealers and farmers.
