Position Summary

Reporting to the Director, Clinical and Training and functionally to the Senior Technical Director, the Associate Research Scientist(Technical Advisor) provides clinical, epidemiologic and research support to ICAP research projects, including the design and implementation of COVID-19 and HIV clinical trials and analysis and dissemination of data. Engages with investigators and technical counterparts to assist in the overall coordination of planning and conduct of these trials. Assists with the supervision of NIH- and industry-funded COVID and HIV clinical trials at ICAP sites and has the opportunity to develop and seek funding for clinical and/or implementation science research projects.

The Associate Research Scientist (Technical Advisor) also supports ICAP programs by helping to integrate COVID-19 related initiatives with HIV and other health system programs by reviewing workplans, progress and challenges, synthesizing relevant literature and conducting site visits to assess quality of care, to ensure that ICAP programs are of the highest quality and consistent with the most recent scientific evidence and international guidelines.

Major Accountabilities

  • Provide technical assistance in COVID-19 research studies that involve ICAP. This includes the development and/or refinement of protocols, questionnaires, training materials, reports, presentations, analysis plans and other tools needed for COVID-19 research trials.
  • Work as Site Investigator at ICAP’s Bronx and/or Harlem Prevention Center to assist with implementation of COVID-19 and HIV clinical trials, including recruitment of staff, leading staff meetings, supporting development and revision of SOPs, reviewing screening summaries to determine eligibility of potential participants, advising on the clinical management of adverse events, liaising with clinical sites throughout the city to assist with recruitment of participants, and providing clinical support as needed.
  • Provide technical assistance in other public health initiatives supported by ICAP, including HIV care and treatment, integration of HIV programs with COVID-19 testing and treatment programs and TB/HIV integration. This includes design of programs in partnership with in-country teams as well as provision of clinical mentorship, didactic teaching, and guidance to ICAP in-country staff in order to enhance technical capacity at the national, regional, and local levels for the delivery of high quality service programs.
  • Lead the development and/or refinement of materials, including technical updates, clinical guidelines, protocols, algorithms, dosing guides and other clinical support tools.
  • Work with ICAP country teams and ICAP’s Strategic Information Unit to design methods for collection of relevant data as well as interpretation of data and support local use of data to enhance the delivery of high quality, evidence-based HIV care and treatment.
  • Conduct visits to research sites and country programs to provide supervision and technical assistance in clinical and research issues including reviewing workplans, progress and challenges and conducting site visits to provide clinical mentorship and to assess quality of care and adherence to standards of care. Host technical meetings for in-country staff that aim to transfer knowledge, review progress, discuss implementation challenges and strategies on the way forward.
  • Oversee and/or actively participate in the preparation of grant proposals and renewals relevant to ICAP; provide technical expertise for other grant writing activities within ICAP.
  • Oversee and/or actively participate in the design, implementation and dissemination of research studies and public health evaluations.

Minimum Qualifications

  • PhD, MD or professional equivalent required
  • 5+ years of related experience with at least three years of experience in clinical and/or epidemiological research and adult HIV care and treatment
  • Experience in clinical training and mentorship
  • Demonstrated capability to establish and maintain effective professional relationships as well as managing technical teams
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
  • Excellent and effective communication skills in written and spoken English
  • Demonstrated experience in public speaking on clinical care issues in a manner which reflects subject matter expertise
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office applications (e.g., Outlook, Excel, Word, etc.)

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior clinical trials experience strongly preferred
  • Experience in HIV care and treatment program implementation in developing countries

Additional Information

  • Requires international travel of approximately 2 trips per year with each trip lasting approximately 10 days and 6 domestic trips for clinical trial team meetings
