Job summary

The Research Officer will oversee all ethical and regulatory activities related to research and evaluations carried out at the foundation. They will maintain an up-to-date regulatory file, correspond with relevant local and international research/evaluation regulatory bodies and actively participate in building research regulatory capacity at the foundation in accordance with acceptable national and international laws and regulations. The Research Officer will contribute 100% time and effort to set-up electronic and paper-based systems for safe custody of all required regulatory documents; develop appropriate SOPs that streamline regulatory processes; provide guidance and direction to researchers and research staff at the foundation, and build their capacity through mentoring and training on research/evaluation ethics and regulations. They will coordinate and advise on all regulatory activities at the facility level and at EGPAF head office in Harare; in addition, they will periodically communicate directly with the relevant office in charge of research/evaluation regulation at the EGPAF headquarters in the USA.


Responsibilities

Oversee and maintain safe custody of all essential documents used in the conduct of evaluations/research at EGPAF and periodically update approvals in accordance with local and international regulations; Work directly with local regulatory bodies, EGPAF HQ assigned regulatory bodies, and donor recommended regulatory bodies to ensure that all protocol submissions, reviews, revisions and approvals are carried out in a timely manner; Periodically conduct internal research/evaluation monitoring and auditing to enhance understanding and compliance of the research team members to the required research protocols/study source documents and make appropriate recommendations to the key stakeholders regarding the status of compliance of their respective studies; Develop and regularly update general regulatory SOPs to be used for the conduct of research/ evaluation studies within EGPAF Zimbabwe; Identify needs and requirements for regulatory training of EGPAF evaluation staff and, together with the research officers, Principal Investigators and co-investigators to develop and implement a training plan that meets the identified deficiencies in Evaluation staff; Maintain a proper record management system for electronic and hard copy information of various studies carried out at the foundation and archive documents for completed and ongoing research studies in line with national and international regulations; Prepare all the necessary documents for protocol submission to relevant institutional research board (IRB) and maintain and follow up all IRB correspondence to ensure all protocols and amendments are approved in a timely manner; Coordinate and work with staff at the Operations Department to ensure all logistical requests for regulatory meetings, trainings, transport, and procurements are initiated, and processed in accordance with EGPAF policies; To maintain appropriate and timely communication with IRB/ECs, Study investigators, EGPAF HQ regulatory persons and other stakeholders to ensure transparent and adequate flow of regulatory information among all stakeholders.


Qualifications

A degree in Statistics, Population Studies Demography, Epidemiology and other related disciplines, including Social Sciences and Public Health; Certificate in Human Subject Protection; 3+ years experience coordinating clinical research or related activities; Good knowledge of spoken and written English; Understanding of Zimbabwe and global policies and guidelines for conducting research involving human participants


Bonus points if you have:

Master degree in Epidemiology, or similar advanced degree in public health, maternal child health or HIV related health science; Experience managing regulatory documents will be an added advantage
