Welthungerhilfe (www.welthungerhilfe.de) is one of the largest and respected private organisations in the field of development cooperation and humanitarian aid in Germany. We carry out projects in 39 countries and campaigns for fairer cooperation within developing countries. Primarily in co-operation with local partner organisations, our task is to contribute to the improvement in nutritional and income base for the low-income populations in Africa, Asia and Latin America. Welthungerhilfe has been implementing projects in Zimbabwe since 1980. Sector focus is on Water Sanitation and Hygiene, Food and Nutrition Security, Livelihoods and when necessary, Emergency response.

Welthungerhilfe is implementing a 12-month project with an overall objective to strengthen the resilience of 3 000 most vulnerable households to climate and economic shocks and their impacts on food security and livelihoods. The proposed project implemented in Gweru will be an integral part of WHHs overall urban portfolio building on and deepening our existing work in urban areas, and our relationship with WFP. For over 20 years, WHH has been implementing resilience building and food security projects in rural and urban areas which include but not limited to: Midlands, Matabeleland North and Matabeleland South provinces. Gweru was selected as one of the domains where WHH is currently implementing an urban resilience building project in addition to a cash transfer project which is suitable for demonstrating the humanitarian development nexus approach. The Project seeks to engage a Gender and Social Inclusion Officer.

Job description duties and responsibilities

  • Coordinate GESI related capacity building initiatives as per need and demands of the organization, program team members and different stakeholders for integrating gender equality and social inclusion programmatically and institutionally;
  • S/he will support the development and review of GESI responsive training curriculum and materials;
  • Facilitate regular community consultations, group meetings, events, roundtable discussions and training sessions to ensure programming remains gender sensitive and inclusivity is on-track;
  • Develop and deliver series of on-going key trainings on GESI to the URB field team including stakeholders either through continuous learning process or utilizing platforms during ongoing events;
  • Support in developing and delivering series of key trainings on GESI, based on the different gender and power inclusion/exclusion dynamics of each program area;
  • Support Livelihoods Specialist in applying tools such as: women leadership skills, engaging men in decision making tools, roles and responsibilities etc;
  • Support field program team members to maximize program participation and increase empowerment opportunities for marginalized groups including Women;
  • Ensure that activity design maximizes participant engagement from the beginning of the program while managing and mitigating risks of cultural disrespect and gender-based violence;
  • Establish current awareness on the importance of GESI programming among target participant groups including community leaders, government and municipality officials including implementing partner organizations’ members;
  • Support Livelihood Specialist to identify and gather stories of change from the field and produce as GESI learning documents.

Qualifications and experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Gender Studies, Sociology, Development Studies or any other relevant discipline;
  • At least 5 years of experience as development practitioner with 2 years of core experience in GESI;
  • Track record of experience on GESI capacity development of program staff and Stakeholders;
  • Good knowledge on data gathering and analysis with strong community interaction skills;
  • Ability to facilitate and synergize the efforts of a multi dynamic and disciplinary team;
  • Good report writing skills;
  • Experience of working with Local Partners, Local NGOs, government agencies, Development Partners, Civil Society organisations and integrating them into program implementation;
  • Fluency in writing and oral communication;
  • Strong public speaking skills;
  • Strong organization and communication skills;
  • Strong skill on training design and facilitation;
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office.
