About CNFA and Farmer to Farmer

Cultivating New Frontiers in Agriculture (CNFA) is a US-based non-profit nongovernmental organization (NGO) that works to stimulate economic growth and improve rural livelihoods in the developing world through five core capabilities: (1) Productivity, Food Security and Nutrition; (2) Input Supply and Farm Services; (3) Economic Resilience and Rapid Recovery; (4) Value Chain Development; and (5) Volunteer Technical Assistance. The USAID funded Farmer-to-Farmer (F2F) Program (2018-2023) is implemented by CNFA in Southern Africa (Madagascar, Malawi, Mozambique, Zambia and Zimbabwe) and the Eastern European country of Moldova. The program aims to connect volunteer experts with farmer groups, agribusinesses, trade associations, agricultural finance providers and other agriculture sector institutions to facilitate sustainable improvements in food security and agricultural processing, production and marketing.


Position summary

To date, F2F volunteers have all been U.S. citizens and permanent residents. During the pandemic, USAID has authorized the F2F program to have paired assignments, where U.S.-based volunteers work virtually with a local, in-country volunteer. The focus of these assignments will be training farmers in business development skills, processing and value addition, good agricultural practices, good governance and organizational strengthening. This is not a paid position however transportation, accommodation, and a modest daily per diem are provided for the volunteers.


Responsibilities

Develop training material using scopes of work provided by the program coordinator, Plan and implement the training with farmer groups for a maximum of 21 days, write detailed reports with recommendations that will be used by the Farmer-to-Farmer program to track progress.


Qualifications

At least a bachelor’s degree in the relevant field of Agriculture/ Agribusiness, Livestock, Economics; a minimum of 5 years work experience in development work and agriculture extension.


Knowledge, skills and abilities requirement

Be willing to work with smallholder farmers in rural Zimbabwe for approximately 3 weeks; have excellent facilitation skills, teamwork, mentorship and coaching skills; be experienced in designing and conducting training courses; have experience in gender mainstreaming in agricultural value chain development programs; Strong interpersonal and communication skills; Must be able to maintain confidentiality matters; Reliable & strong ethics; Good negotiating & interpersonal skills and maintain effective working relationship with partners; Computer literacy.


Languages

Fluency in spoken and written English is essential. Ability to speak and understand Shona strongly preferred.
