“Sizimele Action for Building Resilience in Zimbabwe” is a multi-year project meant to build resilience and well-being of 31,455 at risk households in Insiza, Lupane and Matobo districts of which over 50% are smallholder women rural farmers, 15% unemployed migrant youths and 10% vulnerable households. The main objective of this project is to enable recovery and enhance the resilience of at risk smallholder farmers so that they are food, income and nutrition secure in the face of increasing multiple and chronic shocks and stressors. This initiative was identified and designed in a participatory manner with target groups, local authorities and other stakeholders to transform the livelihoods and resilience of 31,455 households directly and 125,800 men, women and children indirectly in the three districts. This is achieved by building community capacities to prevent and mitigate potential negative impacts of shocks and stressors.

The Sizimele Initiative has four major outcomes: Communities in 57 wards have access to information for decision making on weather related shocks and relevant programmes; Increased crop and livestock asset base and productivity for improved food, nutrition and income security; Strengthened and diversified livelihoods and incomes for local economic development of 31,455 households; Integration of resilience models for systems change & new knowledge in national programmes by government, private sector and other local development partners.

A 5 months temporary cover vacancy has arisen within the Sizimele Consortium for a Community Managed Disaster Risk Reduction (CMDRR) Officer as follows:

General Functions
Under the overall supervision of the Sizimele Programme Consortium Coordinator, the incumbent’s responsibilities will include the following: Assist the Programme Coordinator in overall management, monitoring and coordination of the Disaster Risk Reduction activities in 57 targeted wards Lupane, Matobo and insiza districts; Promote DRR mainstreaming within Sizimele Consortium through capacity building and on-going coaching and mentoring; Research, compile, summarise and present information/ data on Community Managed Disaster Risk Reduction (CMDRR), especially from the High Frequency Monitoring System; Participate in DRR assessments and take oversight in the development of DRR preparedness and response plans and implementation based on findings and lessons learned, ensuring Community Based Structures remain active and functional; Mainstream peace building and conflict transformation in CMDRR activities, ensuring establishment of early warning systems for potential disasters; Participate in Civil Protection Unit (CPU) meetings and activities of national government, relevant line ministries, and civil society organisations and activities for effective relationship and strategic partnership with relevant stakeholders; Document pre and post-training assessments, and develop timely progress and final reports as required; Support in the development and/ or contextualisation of training aids and information tools ranging from posters, short manuals, and brochures and content development in close coordination with the relevant stakeholders; Contribute to overall Consortium Disaster Risk Reduction Programme strategy, promote and facilitate practical integration of risk reduction including climate adaptation; Conduct DRR awareness and training sessions in target communities and conduct adapted disaster drills and emergency simulations; Perform any other duties as assigned.

Academic Qualifications and Experience

Masters’ university degree in social sciences, preferably in Disaster Management, Disaster Studies, Disaster Risk Reduction or related field in social science; A minimum of two years professional work experience on Community Managed Disaster Risk Reduction (CMDRR) (in drought, floods, veldt fires, crop and livestock pests and diseases prone contexts would be an added advantage), and emergency preparedness and response projects; Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work effectively with others in the workplace; Excellent communication, teamwork, and community mobilization; Excellent planning skills; Proficiency in Microsoft/ Windows/Word/Excel required; Must be well organized and capable of completing multiple tasks before a deadline; Willing to intensively travel in rural areas; Sound report writing skills


Fluency in English is required. Knowledge of Ndebele language is an asset.
