The River Angelina Actress Says The Industry Is Unfavorable To Women
The River actress, Nokhuthula Mavuso has exposed the entertainment industry, for not be conducive to female artists.
Nokuthula Mavuso described women artists as overworked, undervalued and enslaved.
She is one of the few actresses to point out the wage gap between female artists and their male counterparts and said working in that kind of environment is a waste of time and talent.
She took to social media to point out the hypocrisy in the industry
“I love theatre I really do mara ke slavery in this country. Especially if you’re a woman. The pay is just not worth it.“
Mavuso remarked that even even in the American children’s theatre, kids are paid way better than women
“Children’s theatre abroad are paid way better.”
She said she has worked not only as an actress but as a director too and never got credited for her work.
“I co-directed a play. Director implemented all my suggestions and didn’t pay all my money, no credit. Co-directed another one of her plays, same s**t, plus she borrowed my book and never returned it. I’m more mad about the book to be honest,”
The former Rhythm City actress said she once worked multiple gigs at once and only took R742 a week and that she would pay rent every week (R300) just in case she would go for months without getting any work.
Nokhuthula Mavuso once revealed that she also suffered sexual harassment while working and said a certain male actor would lick his lips and make se.xual remarks at her when no one was looking.
When she tried reporting the actor no one took her seriously until she took matters in her own hands.
“Worked with an actor years ago who’d harass me constantly when no one was looking. He’d lick his lips, make snaaks comments,etc. I reported him to the SE. Nothing was done. Reported again. No action. Until I refused to work. I went to the studio. Block. “Action!” I’d sit instead,” .
“It hurt deeply, but I knew nobody was coming to save me. I still refused to shoot. It was tense. I knew I was not in the wrong – I’d been wronged.
