Ntsiki Mazwai Calls For Mute AKA: Mzansi Reacts
There is a cocktail of reactions on Twitter after controversial poet and activist, Ntsiki Mazwai called for AKA’s music to be muted.
AKA has been making headlines since this past weekend after an anonymous friend to his late fiance Anele Tembe released a statement to News 24 highlighting that her friend was suffering physical abuse at the hands of the rapper.
The statement which was also accompanied by a video of AKA breaking down Nellie’s door, after she locked herself inside during an explosive fight, has led many to believe that AKA could have been directly or indirectly involved in Nellie’s alleged suicide.
It is to this regard that Mazwai has called for radios to mute AKA’s music until further notice.
I think all radio stations need to mute AKA music till further notice…..

However, her sentiments were met by mixed reactions which include the following;

Even the public they must treat the way they are treating Kelly Khumalo.

I think artists found to be on drugs should be muted. The way its done in sport. That would be a way to discourage the use

but there is no case opened against AKA mos. so far he is just a witness until further notice. so it will be unfair for him. Bring evidence so that he can fall down like the Blade Runner. pic.twitter.com/bfP3Ordf8K

There’s a reason why there’s a law that says suspects are innocent until proven guilty. Every case should be investigated impartially. This thing of jumping to “cancel” people when we don’t know all the facts is rubbish. But anyways at least we’ll still stream when that happens.

This is not the first time Mazwai has come at AKA. In a Twitter discussion about the state of S.A hip-hop earlier this year, the Urongo hitmaker said AKA is not a strong rapper.
@ntsikimazwai: “I must admit… I don’t think aka is a strong rapper. At all.”
One of AKA’s many fans came to his defence, describing the rapper as a versatile artist who appeals to a diversity of audiences, transcending the limitations set by genre boundaries.
@Snjubareni: “He’s an all-rounder even maskandi fans loves his music.”
But Mazwai remained unconvinced and stood her ground, crediting pretty privilege and good English for AKA’s success in the South African music industry.
@ntsikimazwai: “He is light-skinned and confident and speaks good English… That combination works in SA. “
